RESEARCH TOPICS FOR XL CYCLE – Selection procedure for one position with grant on the specific topic "Development and application of a genomic selection pipeline in tomato"

1 (one) position with grant to be carried out mainly at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy) on the following Research topic:

Development and application of a genomic selection pipeline in tomato

Title: Development and application of a genomic selection pipeline in tomato

Scientific tutor: Enrico Francia; Massimiliano Beretta (ISI Sementi)

Hosting Institution: University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy)

The PhD project aims to develop an advanced pipeline for genomic selection in the improvement of tomato varieties, enhancing the efficiency and speed of genetic selection to create more resilient and adaptable varieties. It integrates digital technologies and bioinformatics to manage large amounts of genomic data, in line with the objectives of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), to promote technological innovation and environmental sustainability in agriculture.

The project will contribute to greater environmental sustainability by developing varieties better suited to cultivation, thereby increasing yield per hectare and the qualitative properties of the fruits. Additionally, it will foster digital transformation in the agricultural sector. The doctoral candidate will engage in research and training activities both academically and industrially, with training periods abroad and within companies, to acquire comprehensive skills and an international perspective of the sector. The research facilities include a partner company, advanced laboratories, and databases.

An 18-month training period is planned at ISI Sementi, a 6-month period at one of the top universities renowned for their plant sciences programs in the area of genomic selection (e.g., University of California, Davis or Cornell University, or Wageningen University & Research). In the remaining period, the doctoral candidate may undertake further training activities at a national public research institute (e.g., CREA-GB).
