RESEARCH TOPICS FOR XXXIX CYCLE – Selection procedure for one position with grant on the specific topic “How microbial biodiversity impacts sustainable bioindustry: the role of selective sources to exploit bacterial diversity”

Title of the Research Topic: How microbial biodiversity impacts sustainable bioindustry: the role of selective sources to exploit bacterial diversity

1 (one) position with grant on funds PNRR DM 118/2023, Missione 4, Componente 1, Investimento 4.1 aimed at supporting scholarships for PNRR research doctorates

Scientific Tutor: Prof. Maria Gullo

Research topic: This PhD project aims at strength the microbial diversity occurring at UMCC (Unimore Microbial Culture Collection) biobank, focusing bacterial communities of interest for the bio-industry.

Selective isolation niches will be considered, such as food and soil environments as sources of microbial diversity. The project will be structured in three main research area: 1) detection of isolation sources and characteristics; 2) recovery and identification of bacteria; 3) UMCC databases handling and population. As a key for fulfilling all the objectives, the project will be based on a multidisciplinary structure including microbiological, biotechnological, genomics and data analysis tools. To guarantee the scheduled timeline, the whole activities will be organized in a work-package system.

Within this PhD, a period of research to conduct in a foreign research institute (minimum 6 months, not necessarily consecutive), is planned.

All the activities developed in the frame of this PhD project will follow the principles required by the DM 118 /23 (art. 2 and art. 15).

Required skills: High motivation to build up and conduct research activity at the home institution and in international research teams. Critical view of drawbacks and results analysis, high capacity to communicate results orally and in preparing scientific reports.
