RESEARCH TOPICS FOR XXXVIII CYCLE – Selection procedure for one position with grant on the specific topic " Microbial resources for sustainable bioscience and bioeconomy "

Title of the Research Topic: Microbial resources for sustainable bioscience and bioeconomy

1 (one) position with grant funded by PNRR project “Strengthening the MIRRI Italian Research Infrastructure for Sustainable Bioscience and Bioeconomy (SUS-MIRRI.IT)”

Scientific Tutor: prof. Maria Gullo

Research topic:

Microbial resources, such as bacteria and microbiomes are of great relevance in many research areas, as well as in consolidated and emerging industrial applications. Preservation, analysis, supply, and valorization of microbial resources are then a priority to achieve main goal of sustainability and circular economy concepts.

This PhD project aims at studying microbial resources existing in UMCC (Unimore Microbial Culture Collection) culture collection, as well as in collecting new bacteria and microbiomes, focusing properties relevant for industrial applications. Foods related matrices will be the sources for detecting and collecting new isolates. Design of innovative strategies for high-robust preservation methods of both bacterial strains and microbiomes will be included. The studied microbial resources will be evaluated for building up sustainable bioprocesses based on the valorization of agro-food by-products. The research activity requires an integrated approach supported by microbiological and biotechnology expertise.

The PhD research will be developed in the frame of the project “Strengthening the MIRRI Italian Research Infrastructure for Sustainable Bioscience and Bioeconomy” - SUS-MIRRI.IT, area ESFRI “Health and Food”, granted by the European Commission – NextGenerationEU.

Required skills: High motivation to build up and conduct research activity at the home institution, in international research teams and within SUS-MIRRI participants. Critical view of drawbacks and results analysis, high capacity in preparing scientific reports and communicate results orally.
